A shadow market for unapproved weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.
Investigational Treatment Acquiring Traction Online
The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Followers are urged to contact these profiles privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for transactions.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Medical Experts Voice Concerns
However, doctors and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.
Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.
Service Response and Material Removal
Based on TikTok, the service has taken down violative material and prohibited related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Trading Activities
Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, filled with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed guides for preparing or administering at residence.
After moments of joining one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged testing documentation. None inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.
Product Information and Pricing
Within these communities, posts show dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Safety Actions
A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively moderated dangerous material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Cautions
“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet approved … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
