TikTok Provides The Community Power to Decrease AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a new feature that enables them to cut down on the amount of AI-created videos appearing in their streams. This step comes as the service disclosed that it presently contains more than 1 thousand million AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread release. This development comes amid a surge in content created by AI, driven by emerging video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this content is considered “AI slop”, a phrase for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often absurd or surreal.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content created using AI tools, from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we intend to provide users the option to increase or decrease of that, based on their own choices,” commented a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The service announced that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app labeled as made with AI. In total, more than 100 mn videos are submitted to the platform daily, making clips made by AI a limited percentage of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be in a position to limit or boost the volume of artificial media they view by using the content preference option in the app and choosing “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that currently be adjusted under the setting cover politics, style, beauty, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s policies oblige users to label lifelike artificially created content, and it forbids harmful deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be removed under its community policies.

Furthermore, the service will from now on apply an artificially created watermark to content made using its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an collaborative effort for recognizing AI-generated material. This action is aimed to deter users from attempting to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also launching a two million dollar AI literacy fund for professionals and organizations to create informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support charitable organizations focused on teaching computer science.

Platform Protection

The platform has supported its moderation strategy, amid controversy over proposals to cut jobs for numerous safety staff in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to eliminate hundreds of positions in its trust and safety division in the UK capital, with trade unions and internet security professionals expressing worry that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A company official stated that people-led review would remain essential, but AI can protect employees by filtering out the most harmful content ahead of it gets reviewed by people. TikTok announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content reviewed by safety staff over the past year due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is really helping us work at speed.”
